To create a transition for the pedestrian from closed to open space, the massing of this building steps away from the campus mall at an angle. This "transitional angle" is carried throughout the building and site along a newly created walkway. Also set at this angle are a series of walls that protect the lobby from the afternoon sun, and translucent barrel vaults.

"George Garlock would unquestionably be my first choice of architects in any future building project I might be associated with. He is knowledgeable, has great people skills, and maintains continual contact with the client throughout all phases of the project."

Dr. Vicky Carwein, Former Dean, College of Health Sciences

The highly differentiated forms of the building accentuate the five functions of the College: laboratories, faculty offices, classrooms, lobby, and student commons. The laboratories include Nuclear Medicine, Microbiology, Hematology, Ultrasound, Chemistry, and Clinical Labs. The selection of building materials and colors was influenced both by the contextual campus architecture of masonry with red accents, and by the traditional concepts of health. White porcelain panels and slick, contemporary features symbolize cleanliness and sterility, and are juxtaposed to the "life force" of the red glazing.
